Abstract
1 Thessalonians 5:12 reads very clearly in English:
Now we ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and rule over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them beyond all measure in love, because of their work.
It seems perfectly clear that there are some who rule over others. But! It is not so simple. A study of the underlying Greek word makes it clear that the impression left by this verse is not accurate. The underlying Greek word is proistemi (Strongs #4291).
